Red Light Therapy Helps the Body to Heal Itself (At the Cellular Level)!
What if there was a natural healing modality that could reverse at the cellular level the cause of many diseases and conditions known to man? Or if you are already healthy, provide your body with more energy and better athletic and mental performance! And better yet, a therapy that has no known side effects. I know this sounds too good to be true but red light therapy is just that, ESPECIALLY when using a full body red light bed.
Red light therapy is a form of energy medicine that delivers light energy to the cells by providing a range of red and near infrared wavelengths. It uses a process called photobiomodulation (PBM) to change the condition of damaged tissue by stimulating cellular metabolism thereby accelerating the healing process, and also vastly reducing pain.
There are two aspects behind the science and benefits of red light therapy. The first is the physics of red light therapy, namely the wavelengths used, and the overall power and energy delivered to the person or patient. The second aspect is the health and medical benefits that center around how red light and near infrared light interact with our biology and how these interactions stimulate cellular energy, healing, regeneration and repair.

Part 2: The Physics of Red and Near Infrared Light Therapy
The physics behind red light therapy is mainly due to four principles in physics that are a result of the wavelength of the LED bulbs used, how many bulbs are used, and the way these bulbs are arranged in various applicators, panels, or full body beds, etc. The first principle is the wavelengths of the LEDs that are used. The wavelength of light is the distance from peak to peak between successive crests of a wave. Below is an example of the various wavelengths of visible light.

The wavelength of light is the distance from peak to peak between successive crests of a wave. Below is an example of the various wavelengths of visible light.
Extensive research in red light therapy has shown that the most beneficial wavelengths are between 600 - 680 nm (nanometers) which is in the visible red range AND also near infrared wavelengths between 810 - 1100 nm. The near infrared have two divisions, nonthermal (810 -880) and thermal (910 -1100). Both 600-680 and 810-880 interact with the mitochondria (via Cytochrome C Oxidase) to create ATP, NO and other beneficial energy producing and healthful signaling molecules. The thermal bands interact with water mainly which has been shown to have significant benefits in energy production, healing and repair via different but complementary mechanisms. Ideally your LED infrared bed should contain AT LEAST one wavelength in the red, at least one in the near infrared and one thermal near infrared for maximum benefits. It is worth noting that even in these research proven ranges, there seems to be some wavelengths that are better than others. For example 810nm is considered the deepest penetrating of all wavelengths because it is a perfect balance of minimizing absorption and maximum biological effect. As another example, 980nm being a thermal wavelength is best for both its penetrating effects and its optimal interaction with water. So these are two wavelengths we think you should look for!
The next three aspects of the physics of Red light therapy has to do with the overall power and energy delivered. To quantify the energy output three different principles are involved: Light irradiance, total optical power, and total dose or total energy. Light irradiance is the power density of red light over a given area. It refers to the number of photons that are flowing through a certain area and are available for absorption into your cells. The unit of measure for light irradiance is milliwatts per square centimeter (mW/cm²). If power density/irradiance is not considered and only wavelength is factored into the equation of red light therapy, you could end up with a low-powered device that will not provide enough red light to be beneficial. No matter what the wavelength, if irradiance is too low, the device will not be as effective in cellular penetration. Pertaining to full body LED beds, we have measured values between 10 and 40 milliwatts per square centimeter. Here MORE is better! The Spectra has the strongest irradiance we have measured using a lab grade spectrometer that was calibrated and certified.
Total optical power is measured in milliwatts or watts (energy per unit time) and it is calculated from the total surface area of patient/person that is illuminated multiplied by the irradiance so if you have an irradiance of 10 milliwatts per square centimeter, and you do an application on a slightly larger than average male having a total surface area of 2 meters squared, (or 20,000 centimeters squared), that gives you 10x20,000 = 200,000 milliwatts (200 Watts) of total optical power delivered to your body. Now to cover the entire body you need a full body light bed, and the HUGE benefit of LED beds is you get upwards to hundreds of times more total optical power than smaller applicators! Also it is important to mention most panels on the market are not only considerably smaller but because you have to stand or sit a distance away, you get a LOT more reflected light that does not penetrate!
Finally total optical power leads to total energy, fluence or simple total dosage. Essentially the total dose is the time of your session multiplied by the total optical power which gives the total amount of energy delivered usually measured in Joules. So for the example above, 200 Watts of optical power delivered for 10 minutes (600 seconds), gives 200 x 600 = 120,000 Joules of energy! Most smaller devices will deliver less than 5,000 Joules in the same amount of time!
As a comparison 1 hour in the sun in the afternoon on the average will give you around 1,000,000 joules. An hour with a whole light bed can give you almost as much or even more energy in the same time AND it has concentrated the therapeutic frequencies whereas sunlight these frequencies are only a tiny sliver (plus no sunburns!).

Part 3: The Medical Benefits of Red Light Therapy
Red light therapy works by targeting specific chromophores in the cells (light receiving molecules)such as Cytochrome C Oxidase (CCO) within the mitochondria. This is the main molecule that is working the magic because it is directly involved in ATP production, molecular signaling, DNA transcription and many other steps that are at the root of overall health, healing and regeneration! Because these main molecules in cellular respiration (ATP production) receive light mainly in the 600-680nm and 800-880nm range, which are both visible red light and near infrared wavelengths respectively, we refer to this as red light therapy.
However current research has shown that frequencies between 900 and 1100 have many benefits that work with the cellular water. Good research shows 980 nm for example has MANY benefits in further activating ATP production by enhancing ATP synthase along with activating calcium channels that regulate almost every process in the body (muscle contraction, blood coagulation, signal transfer in nerves, gene expression, etc.) AND from the Ca2+ you get a lot of signaling inside the cells because the calcium channels are open.
All these cellular and tissue mechanisms come together to provide a wide array of amazing healing benefits of red light therapy.

Furthermore, there are NASA studies in red light therapy for wound healing, and tissue growth and regeneration!
While the benefits are literally an A-Z encyclopedia (because it works at the cellular level), the most popular benefits include:
1) Skin/Hair/Anti-aging - The main thing is PBM stimulates Collagen Synthesis, so the fine lines and wrinkles will look smoother if you can stimulate collagen. Also helps with pigmented spots. Also increases the sheen (soft glow) on the skin.
2) More Energy and Athletic Performance / Recovery/Muscle Growth/more energy
3) Brain Health and Recovery including TBI/Stroke, degenerative brain disorders, Psychiatric (depress, anxiety, PTSD, addictions)
4) Pain Relief and Chronic and Acute Inflammation - tendinitis, carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, tendon, cartilage things can be terrible and goes on for years. Also can help with huge opioid epidemic.
5) Wound Healing /Diabetic Foot ulcers /Regeneration. Wound healing was the first and perhaps still the most researched benefit.
6) Weight Loss - By promoting better circulation, red light therapy helps the body to emulsify and burn fat. Exercise and Red light therapy work very well together!
7) Better Sleep - Red light therapy has been show to increase melatonin and help you sleep better.
